At Busy Hands Montessori, tamariki are gently introduced to language and mathematics through hands-on, playful learning. Children explore letters, numbers, sounds, and patterns using Montessori materials that make abstract concepts concrete and fun.

Literacy activities include sandpaper letters, phonetic games, storytelling, and tracing, which support reading and writing readiness. Numeracy is introduced through counting beads, number rods, and pattern blocks — helping children understand quantity, order, and simple math concepts.

Children learn at their own pace in a calm, supportive environment, developing confidence and a love for learning.

A typical day may include:

At Busy Hands Montessori, tamariki develop their senses through hands-on experiences with textures, colours, sounds, shapes, and sizes. Sensorial learning helps children refine observation, comparison, and classification — laying the groundwork for critical thinking and early academics.

Children explore Montessori materials like colour tablets, sound boxes, and texture boards, as well as natural sensory experiences like water play and our outdoor sandpit. These activities support language, focus, and memory in a joyful, engaging way.

A typical sensorial day may include:

• Matching sounds or sorting by colour

• Exploring textures and temperatures

• Building with shapes and solids

• Digging and playing in the sandpit

• Quiet discovery through observation

Our environment encourages exploration with purpose and delight.

At Busy Hands Montessori, tamariki build independence, coordination, and confidence through real-life tasks. With child-sized tools and gentle guidance, they learn to pour, sweep, button, and prepare food — gaining fine and gross motor skills while developing responsibility and focus.

Our kaiako (teachers) support each child’s natural desire to do things “all by myself.” These activities also encourage patience, order, and pride in caring for themselves and their surroundings.

Children practise grace and courtesy, building social skills and a strong sense of belonging.

Activities include:

• Pouring, spooning, and food prep

• Dressing frames (buttons, zips, laces)

• Tidying and self-care routines

• Greeting others and taking turns

Practical Life forms the foundation for concentration and lifelong learning.
